This half course will review issues in contemporary world affairs, focussing on the period from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the present day. The course will examine the politics and practice of foreign policy decision making, drawing in part on my own experiences. Themes to be covered will include the following:

1. Foreign policy in the Cold War context

2. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of Communism

3. The transformation of Eastern Europe: NATO and EU enlargement

4. Humanitarian crises and intervention: Somalia, Rwanda

5. Balkan conflicts and intervention: Bosnia, Kosovo

6. September 11, 2001 and its aftermath

7. The war in Afghanistan

8. The war in Iraq

9. The United States and changing power relationships in world affairs
