RE: Appointment of Professor Stephen Rupp as Acting Principal, Victoria College

DATE: May 1, 2017

I am pleased to announce that the Board of Regents of Victoria University has approved the appointment of Professor Stephen Rupp as Acting Principal of Victoria College from 1 July 2017 until 30 June 2018 during Principal Esterhammer’s administrative leave.

Professor Rupp has a long record of experience in academic administration. He has served as Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (1998-2009), Director of the Ibero-American Studies Program (2001-05), and Vice-Dean, Faculty and Academic Life in the Faculty of Arts and Science (2009-15). At Victoria he has been a member of the Board of Regents (2002-09, 2015-16) and Coordinator of the Renaissance Studies Program (1994-98). He has served on numerous committees in areas related to human resources, labour relations, and budget. He is Acting Director of the Northrop Frye Centre for the 2016-17 academic year.

Professor Rupp is a Fellow of Victoria College and both an alumnus and Senior Fellow of Massey College. He has taught in two Victoria College programs (Literature and Critical Theory and Renaissance Studies), and he is currently an instructor in Vic One. His academic interests centre on two areas that enjoy a long history at Victoria University: the European Renaissance and classical literature and culture. He has recently published Heroic Forms: Cervantes and the Literature of War, and his current project focuses on Cervantes’s responses to the three canonical genres of Vergilian poetry: eclogue, georgic, and epic.
