Izzeldin Abuelaish Honoured
Victoria College welcomed the Class of 2017 at a special Orientation Convocation on September 4. Izzeldin Abuelaish was honoured at the event with the conferring of a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
Abuelaish is an internationally recognized proponent of peace, especially between Palestinians and Israelis. He sees health and health care as a bridge to peace. Having worked with many international organizations in areas of conflict, his goal is to end suffering through creating working partnerships to foster forgiveness and reconciliation between communities in conflict.
Motivated by the horrific death of his three daughters and niece during the 2009 Gaza War, Abuelaish published his 2010 book, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey. This acclaimed book underlines how medicine is a human equalizer and that doctors are messengers for peace. It has been translated into 20 languages. Abuelaish is an associate professor at U of T’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
