Professor Matt Kavaler is a Professor of Art History, and Acting Chair of the Art Department at the University of Toronto. He also has held the position of Associate Director of the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at Victoria University in the University of Toronto. Professor Kavaler specializes in northern European art of the Renaissance, having published several works in this field with more forthcoming. He has also penned numerous articles on the rise of secular painting in the Netherlands, and the stunning revival of Late Gothic architecture in the early modern period, having coined the term "Renaissance Gothic". Due to his strong interest in the Gothic, Professor Kavaler formed an internal conference in Paris on this particular topic. In addition to teaching and writing, he is also a established art photographer, with his work have been featured in several publications in both Europe and North America. Professor Kavaler is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Archaeology of Belgium, sits on the board of trustees of the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, and is the Interim Director of the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies for 2014-2015.
