Cultural Concepts

Description

Look at any news media, or talk to anyone in your community, and you’ll notice that certain ideas or beliefs are constant parts of our discussions. Often, we don’t consider where these ideas come from, or what they really mean to us.

In Cultural Concepts, we will consider broad questions about beliefs and institutions in modern society. Discussion will focus around questions like:

Participants will be encouraged to think critically about aspects of the world around them. Discussions will be academic in nature, though not necessarily focused around a specific essay or book.

Participation Requirements

Student mentors must be currently registered Victoria College students in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year. Academic background and commitment to outreach and education are also considered in the selection of mentors.

Mentor positions for Winter 2016 have been filled, and applications are closed. Thank you to everyone who applied! We will recruit more mentors for our community outreach programs in the fall.

Schedule

Wednesdays, January 27 - February 24

12:00-2:00 pm

All classes take place in the Copper Room in the Goldring Student Centre (2nd floor, 150 Charles Street West).

There will be no class on Wednesday, February 17, due to the university's Reading Week.

Meals

Lunch will be provided at each session, including Halal, vegetarian, and vegan options. Most other dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice.
