Country: Austria
Timeline of Trip: 8-12 weeks, May-August
Contact Information: learning.abroad@utoronto.ca
Description: Faculty-led research project at the University of Graz. The Center for Inter‐American Studies, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Roberta Maierhofer, was established by the Rectorate of the University of Graz as a platform for interdisciplinary and inter‐regional communication and collaboration in the Americas in 2006 and was officially founded in 2007. This new interest in Inter‐American relationships was sparked by processes such as globalization and transnational migration ‐ developments that transform cultural identities and challenge conceptions of “self” and “other.” Especially in Europe, which itself is in the midst of negotiating a “European identity” in addition to national and regional ones, changing reference points demand re‐conceptualization of academic perspectives. For European scholars of Inter‐American Studies, the “Americanness” of the Americas and the changing qualities of “self” and “other” are of particular interest, encouraging a re‐definition of positions and mental frameworks. By building intra‐regional cooperation in international education based on teaching and research, new possibilities of collaboration and mobility are created and a wide variety of research projects in the field of Collective Identities, re‐ conceptualizing traditional approaches not only in terms of transnational and trans‐regional, but also in terms of Euro‐American relations, international summer schools, multifaceted lecture series, and publications contribute to the establishment of Inter‐American Studies on a national and also international level. The research student will be involved in all current projects of the Center for Inter‐American Studies such as: DigLit (Lit. Up Your Phones: a Digital Toolkit for ESL/EFL Classroom to Combat Social Inequalities in Times of Covid 19 Crises), Organization of the GUSEGG Summer School "Re‐Measuring, Re‐Calculating, Re‐Counting: State ‐ Society ‐ Religion in Transition", https://international.uni‐graz.at/de/summerschools/graz‐international‐summer‐school‐seggau/

Experiential Learning Type: Varies
Deadline(s): March 1 2022
Country: Ireland
Time of Trip: Summer
Contact Information: summer.abroad@utoronto.ca
Description: This course will foster deeper comprehension of Irish history and culture through the imaginative lens of contemporary Irish cinema. Following the restructuring of the Irish Film Board in 1993, the reorganization of Irish tax laws, recent co-production agreements, and a number of international cross-over box-office successes, the idea of Irish cinema has exceeded both previous definitions and stereotypical depictions. We will critically examine contemporary films and moving image art in the context of Irish culture and identity, to include such historical markers as “The Troubles,” while being attentive to both industrial and governmental structures. At the same time, complex negotiations between an Irish North American diasporic market for nostalgia films and local investment in more complex postcolonial representation will be studied. Lastly, how Irelands’ iconic landscape has been mobilized in both local and recent Hollywood blockbuster productions – the ‘selling’ of Ireland – and its effects on ecologies –both natural and industrial –will be explored, in addition to analyzing how landscape itself has fostered attempts to shape a national cinema’s self-definition, that has, in turn, cultivated film tourism.

We will read several plays by Shakespeare in this course—ranging across comedy, history, tragedy, and romance— and we will watch several productions to encounter the most famous early modern playwright’s work through the live medium of performance.

Country: Greece
Time of Trip: Summer
Contact Information: summer.abroad@utoronto.ca
Description: This course explores Modern Greek culture in the context of the Mediterranean and European regions and with reference to the continuing Greek influence on western civilization. Hellenism has influenced the world since the ancient times. Starting from their remarkable contributions in philosophy, politics, science, architecture, history, music, theatre and literature, Greeks continue to impact our everyday lives through their language and culture. It is impossible to celebrate the liberties and responsibilities of democracy, to embrace the spirit of the Olympic games, to enjoy the flavours of Mediterranean cuisine or to feel the magic of a theatrical play, without revealing their Greek connections. The course analyzes important aspects of contemporary Greek society and its values along with elements of Greek language, literature, food, and arts. Students will experience living and studying in glorious Athens, a European megalopolis surrounded by significant monuments and museums. Students will also explore some of the most picturesque regions of mainland Greece such as the historic city of Ioannina and Metsovo in Epirus and the world famous Meteora in Thessaly. Through lectures, readings, interaction with distinguished Greek professionals and educational excursions to sites of historical and cultural importance, students will have the opportunity to explore and analyze critically contemporary Greece. They will discover interesting aspects of a unique culture that remains resilient to regional and international challenges. The course is taught in English and there are no Greek language requirements.
