Rhonda’s Corner: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sep 22, 2025

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tuesday, Sept. 30, is a time to pause together to honour survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home and reflect on our shared responsibilities in reconciliation. At Victoria University, this work carries particular weight because Egerton Ryerson founded our university and held views on education that influenced the development of systems later used in the residential school system. Reflecting on this history honestly is part of our path forward.

This year’s program offers meaningful opportunities to learn and reflect. Shane Joy Vic 2T5 will deliver a keynote lecture on Ryerson’s shifting views of Indigenous education, situating his legacy within the broader tensions of the time.

Equally important, the exhibition at E.J. Pratt Library, created by our librarians, reveals the stories of Victoria’s earliest Indigenous students and showcases archival materials such as James Evans’s Cree syllabic type.

These contributions remind us that research and dialogue led by our students and community members are vital to shaping Vic U’s future.

Though I will be out of the country on Sept. 30, I will be holding this day, and its meaning for Victoria University, close to my heart. I encourage you to join together in reflection, dialogue, and hope. This gathering is part of our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation—work that must continue well beyond this day.

Here are the details of the event. I look forward to hearing your feedback when I return.
